Let´s see now some basic facts about London history:

43 Roman Emperor Claudius invades Britain and builds the port of Londinium
1042 Edward the Confessor, who makes Westminster his home, begins Westminster Abbey
1176 London Bridge is built in stone, London´s only bridge until 1729
1576 The Globe Theathre is built – Shakespeare´s plays are performd there.
1631 Inigo Jones designs London´s first square – the Piazza in Covent Garden
1666 The Great Fire of London destroys four-fifths of the City of London
1675 Sir Christopher Wren begins the new St. Paul´s Cathedral
1700s London´s population is about 575.000. It is western Europe´s biggest city.
1802 London is the world´s largest port.
1834 Houses of Parliament burn down; new one begun in 1835.
1851 The Great Exhibition is held in Hyde Park; the South Kensington museums are built.
1890 The first Tube train runs.
1940s London suffers under the “Blitz”- German bombardment during the 2nd World War -large areas, but St. Paul´s Cathedral, are destroyed - families go underground
1960s The Swinging Sixties- Carnaby Street, Chelsea and Kensington are the places to be.
1970s Margaret Thatcher is elected, and punk is born on the Kings Road. The Sex Pistols and The Clash become famous all over the world.
1980s The old Docklands area is developed – Light Railway and London City Airport – Heathrow -open.
1994 Eurostar trains run from Waterloo to Paris through the Channel Tunnel
2001 The population of London is over eight million, with over a million commuters each day.
2012 The Olympic Games are held in London for the third time in history
2020 The UK leaves the EU (brexit)
