During his life bishop Valentine was known as the protector of lovers.
The Roman Emperor Claudius the Cruel banned marriage to recruit more men for his army.

In secrecy Valentine married the men and women who came to him. As he was also known as a healer he was summoned to Rome to heal a child from the ruling class. His fame grew and led many to convert to Christianity. One night he was abducted and beheaded on the road from Terin to Rome – Via Flaminia – in 269 A.D.

Before that, at the age of 80, he was imprisoned in Rome. From prison he sent a letter to his attorney signed “Your Valentine”. The letter was delivered by a dove.

Pope Gelasius declares February 14th to be St. Valentine´s Day in 496

Charles, Duke of Orleans, was one of the first people to send a ‘valentine’. In 1415 he sent several rhyming love letters or ‘valentines’ to his wife in France from the Tower of London, where was in jail.

Lovers nowadays write letters of love every February 14th.
