These are the most important facts of the origins of Bonfire Night.

A. They were arrested, tortured and executed.

B.The King's supporters got hold of the letter and the plot was rumbled.

C. One of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was tasked with igniting this huge bomb.

D. On 5th, November 1605, a group of Catholic conspirators plotted to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England (and VI of Scotland).

E. They put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament.

F. One member of the group sent a letter to his friend in Parliament. He warned him to stay away on 5 Nov.

G. Guards broke into the cellars where the gunpowder plotters were waiting.

H. They had planned to blow up the House of Lords during the opening of parliament.

I. The king and the rest of the political elite would assemble there.

J. They got ready to set off a massive explosion.
