MARATHON THE ORIGIN OF THE MARATHON

  THE ORIGINS OF THE MARATHON.   The origin of the current marathon dates back to 490 B.C. when the Battle of Marathon took place: The Athenians commanded by general Militiades defeated the Persian army on the Marathon plain close to Attica. An Athenian soldier, Pheidippides ,, was sent to the Greek capital to report the victory. He bursted into the Athenian assembly and said “we have won!”. After that he collapsed and died of exhaustion. Nevertheless the distance between the plain of Marathon and Athens is of nearly 25 miles (about 40 km). Why is the current marathon 26.2 miles (42, 195 km)?   THE MODERN MARATHON The additional distance was added in the London Olympic Games of 1908. Queen Alexandra requested the marathon to start from Windsor Castle and finish at the Olympic Stadium in front of the royal box so all the Royal family could enjoy it without any inconvenience at all.
